When can SPSS and statistics support help you?
SPSS often seems manageable when you practise with a prepared dataset. It becomes more difficult when you have to work with your own research data.
You may have missing values, variables that have not been coded correctly or results that do not match your expectations. You may also be unsure whether the analysis you intend to conduct actually answers your research question.

Your research question, hypotheses, variables, dataset, research design and programme requirements determine which analyses are appropriate. A statistical test should never be selected simply because it is available in the software.

Preparing and checking your data
Before you can run an analysis, your dataset needs to be structured correctly. We can help you:

- recode variables;

Choosing the right statistical test
Not every statistical test fits every research question or type of data. We help you understand which analysis may be appropriate and why.

Conducting and understanding your analysis
Running a test is only part of the process. You also need to know whether you used it correctly and what the output means.
Your coach can explain:
- which assumptions you need to check;
- where to find the relevant information in your SPSS output;
- which tables and values matter;
- what a result does and does not show;
- whether an effect is statistically significant;
- how to distinguish statistical significance from practical relevance;
- how the findings relate to your hypotheses or sub-questions.
The aim is not simply to produce output. You should understand what you have done and be able to explain your choices.
Help with reporting your SPSS results
SPSS can generate a large amount of output, but most of it does not belong in your thesis. You need to select the relevant findings and describe them clearly.

SPSS, Stata, R or Python: which software should you use?
SPSS is widely used for survey research and quantitative bachelor’s and master’s theses. Its menu-based interface makes many analyses relatively accessible, but choosing and interpreting the correct analysis still requires statistical understanding.
Stata is often used for econometrics, longitudinal research, panel data and analyses that need to be reproduced through commands or do-files.
R and Python may be appropriate for more advanced, customised or programming-based analyses.
The right programme depends on:
- your research question;
- the type and size of your dataset;
- the analyses you need to perform;
- the software prescribed by your programme;
- your own level of experience;
- the instructions provided by your supervisor.
Do not change software simply because another programme appears easier. First check what your degree programme expects and whether your dataset and analysis plan fit the software. Personal help with Stata
Are you working with Stata rather than SPSS? We can also support you with the preparation, execution and interpretation of your analyses in Stata.

Online SPSS and statistics support
Most statistics coaching can take place online. By sharing your screen, you and your coach can look at your dataset, syntax, analyses and output together.
You can ask questions while the coach explains each step. This makes online support suitable for both short, focused questions and longer research projects.
Online coaching is also convenient when you:
- are an international student in the Netherlands;
- follow an English-taught degree programme;
- are completing your graduation project abroad;
- study at a university outside the Netherlands;
- need support that is not available near you;
- want to work directly with your own dataset and software.
Support can be provided in English or Dutch, depending on the coach and your preference.
Statistics support that fits your programme
Jouw Scriptiecoach has experience with bachelor’s and master’s students at Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences.
This is relevant because a statistically correct analysis is not automatically sufficient for your thesis. You also need to follow the methodology, reporting guidelines and assessment criteria of your own programme.
We therefore ask you to share relevant documents where possible, such as:

Request a free, no-obligation consultation and briefly describe your research, software, deadline and current problem.
2. Share the relevant documents
Depending on your question, we may ask for your research proposal, dataset, questionnaire, analysis plan, output, programme requirements or supervisor feedback.
Please remove personal or confidential information from your dataset where necessary.
3. We assess what support you need
We look at the nature of your question and determine which coach may be suitable. We also discuss whether you need a short session for a specific issue or more extensive guidance.
4. Work on your own research with your coach
During the session, your coach explains the steps, reviews your choices and helps you understand the analysis. You continue working on your own research and remain responsible for the final decisions, calculations and text.
5. Continue independently
The purpose of the coaching is to give you enough understanding and direction to move forward. You receive concrete explanations and next steps that you can apply to your research.

- does not write your thesis or results section on your behalf;
- does not fabricate, alter or supplement research data;

- does not make final academic decisions for you;
- does not replace your official supervisor or examiner.
