The objective is for your research to contribute value to society in some manner. You may also aim for a thesis that has practical relevance. Typically, you concentrate on resolving an existing problem within a company or organization. Your research findings offer insights to address such a problem, although it is ultimately the responsibility of the organization or company itself to take action.

Scientific relevance

When your research is scientifically relevant, you contribute to the existing body of scientific knowledge. This can, for example, involve filling gaps in the literature, addressing theoretical issues, supplementing existing literature, or introducing new perspectives, also known as a ‘research gap’. To ensure the scientific relevance of your thesis, it is important to identify topics with limited available information.

How can you ensure that your research is scientifically relevant?

• Identify the gaps in the literature: Research what has not yet been studied or is unknown in your field. This can be accomplished by reviewing existing literature and identifying areas that require further investigation.
• Formulate questions and ambiguities: Questions and ambiguities may arise while reading scientific articles. Use them as a guide for your own research. By addressing these questions or resolving these uncertainties, you will enhance the scientific significance of your thesis.
