Getting started with design-oriented research and the Double Diamond model

Are you planning to engage in design research with a focus on the Double Diamond model? Design research is an effective method for addressing intricate problems and generating innovative solutions. The Double Diamond model, developed by the British Design Council, offers a robust framework for organizing this process. Let’s delve into the initial steps of design research and the implementation of the Double Diamond model.

What is the Double Diamond model?

The Double Diamond model, developed by the British Design Council in 2005, is a powerful framework. It focuses on understanding user needs, generating creative ideas, and testing solutions. By following the Double Diamond model, you can take a structured and iterative approach to solving complex problems and developing innovative solutions.

The Double Diamond model in detail:

The model consists of two “diamonds”, each representing two phases of the process: Discovery, Definition, Development, and Delivery. This also explains the model’s nickname: the 4D model. Each diamond symbolizes a process of divergence (exploring and investigating) followed by convergence (making choices and taking action). You go through the following four phases:

  • Step 1: Discover: In the first phase, Discover, you will delve deeply into the problem area. You will gather information, conduct observations, and communicate with stakeholders in order to gain a thorough understanding of the problem. Utilize tools such as observation, stakeholder diaries, and context mapping to explore diverse perspectives and avoid biases.
  • Step 2: Define: After exploring the problem, it is time to precisely define it. In the Define phase, utilize the insights gained during the Discover phase to formulate the problem accurately. Make use of focus groups, personas, and customer journey mapping to define the problem from a user-centric perspective.
  • Step 3: Develop: Now that the problem has been clearly defined, it is time to search for solutions. In the Develop phase, diverge and generate creative ideas, exploring various solutions. Employ brainstorming sessions, scenarios, and prototyping to develop and test new ideas.
  • Step 4: Deliver: Finally, it is time to test and refine your solutions. In the Deliver phase, converge and select the best solutions, implementing and testing them on a small scale. Use tools such as user testing and customer lifecycle mapping to gather feedback and enhance your solutions.

What is the difference between Design Thinking and the Double Diamond model?

Design Thinking and the Double Diamond model are closely related, but they represent different concepts within design-oriented research. Design Thinking is a broad approach to problem-solving and innovation that focuses on understanding user needs, generating creative ideas, and testing solutions. It is a people-oriented process that revolves around empathy, creativity, and iterative improvement. Design Thinking encompasses various methods and techniques that can be applied in different contexts, such as product development, service design, business innovation, and more.

The Double Diamond model is a specific visualization of the Design Thinking process. It consists of two ”diamonds,” each representing a process of divergence (exploring and investigating possibilities) and then convergence (making choices and taking action). The first diamond includes the Discover and Define phases, where the problem is understood and defined. The second diamond includes the Develop and Deliver phases, where solutions are generated and tested.

In other words, Design Thinking is an overarching approach or mindset to problem-solving, while the Double Diamond model is a specific visualization of how that process can proceed, with a focus on diverging and converging in each of the two diamonds.
