It could be a chapter you need to read, notes you need to review, or an assignment you need to complete. Make sure your goal is clear and well-defined.
- Set the timer: Set a timer for 25 minutes (this is one pomodoro). During this period, you need to fully focus your attention on the task you have chosen, avoiding any distractions.
- Work focused: Throughout the pomodoro, dedicate yourself completely to the task at hand. Minimize possible distractions by muting your phone, ignoring social media messages, and refraining from surfing the Internet.
- Pause and relax: Once the 25 minutes are up, stop working and take a 5-minute break. Use this time to stretch, take deep breaths, and relax. Alternatively, you can make yourself a cup of coffee, tea, or have a glass of water. This short break will help you recharge your energy and regain focus.
- Move to the next pomodoro: After a 5-minute break, proceed to the next 25-minute pomodoro (again, using a timer). Once you have completed four pomodoros, take a longer break of about 15-30 minutes.
- Tip: Keep track of the number of pomodoros you complete each day and take note of your progress and accomplishments.
- Be flexible: It’s possible that some tasks might require more than one pomodoro to complete. In such cases, you can break the task down into smaller parts and work on them using multiple pomodoros.
- Also, experiment with what works for you: Although the Pomodoro technique follows a structured approach, it doesn’t mean you have to adhere strictly to the suggested times. Adjust the duration of the pomodoros and breaks according to your own needs and ability to concentrate.
