How do you write your epilogue for your thesis?

An epilogue serves as a reflection on your research and writing journey. It adds a personal touch while maintaining a professional tone, allowing you to share your experiences and key takeaways. Additionally, it offers an opportunity to express gratitude to those who have supported you, if you haven’t already done so in the foreword or acknowledgments section. Although many students prefer writing a foreword, if you choose to include an epilogue, it should be placed before the bibliography, following the conclusion and any discussions or recommendations.

What should you include in your epilogue?

  • Reflection: Take the time to reflect and evaluate, considering what went well, what didn’t go well, what you would do differently next time, and what you have learned. It is also important to assess the collaboration aspect if you worked on the thesis with others. If you choose not to include an epilogue but still wish to reflect, you can add a separate chapter titled “Reflection” instead of using an epilogue.
  • Acknowledgments: Use the epilogue to express gratitude towards the people who have supported and helped you throughout the process. If you have already done so in the foreword or a separate acknowledgments section, you can omit it in the epilogue.

To conclude the epilogue, include your name, followed by the place name and the date of writing. Keep in mind that an epilogue is typically limited to one A4 page in length.

Just as with a foreword or acknowledgements, it is acceptable to write the epilogue in the first person and use a personal tone. However, it is important to maintain professionalism throughout.

What doesn’t belong in the epilogue?

The epilogue does not pertain to the subject of your thesis or research. You should not address research results, findings, or areas for improvement within the epilogue. This content belongs in the discussion section, not in the epilogue.
